Godfall the Looter-Slasher for the next-gen PS5 console

We take a look at this PS5 exclusive, a looter-slasher from Counterplay Games intended to be Destiny with swords. This is a game masterfully designed for the new PS5, so if you want to embark on the PlayStation 5 hype train, you should give Godfall a thought.

Godfall: a next-gen PS5 looter-slasher

The "Looter-Slasher" expression comes from Counterplay Games' focus on those two key factors in Godfall. You'll spend a whole lot of time looting, but only after you have spent a great deal of time wailing on enemies with dual blades, polearms, great hammers, and a virtually impenetrable shield. Turn that loot into better loot, collect enough funds to craft the trendy yet functionally similar Valorplates and you have an okay base to build around. I don't know what to say about Godfall besides do not buy it yet. It looks superb, don't get me wrong. However, R1,400 for a PS5 benchmark game is not worth it at all.

Godfall combat

The combat is fun, but after doing it for two weeks, it will be hard to find excitement here. I don't know what Counterplay Games plans on doing to fix it or if they're only going to throw this failed attempt at a "first of its kind" console game to the bin. Normally, I am not much of a sucker for visuals making things"better," but Godfall proves that art management and high-definition hardware can definitely elevate an otherwise by-the-numbers loot-based action console game. I'll put Godfall as one of the nicest PS5 games out there. I enjoy the gameplay a good deal, and I think there is a good base here, but it's the visuals that set it apart and raise it up as a whole. On paper, the concept of adapting a Destiny or Warframe-style game to an entirely melee-centered combat system that has more in common with Dark Souls is a excellent idea. Admittedly, it is the kind of game I've needed for years because Monster Hunter does not quite scratch that itch for me.

Godfall

Maybe it's all Destiny Beyond love and the "pro reviewers" praising D2BL to stop players from leaving to Godfall and down playing Godfall simultaneously. First off to say it has only 3 different "planets" is a huge understatement. Thinking ahead in an action-slasher -- especially one this fast -- is a welcome change to the sometimes sluggish combat of a "Demon's Souls" or "Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice". It is on the list of best PS5 adventure games since it come out. You still need to comprehend the dancing, but you need to do it much, much faster. I appreciate that. Up to now, Godfall is the first game to actually justify upgrading to a next-generation console or graphics card. The game looks absolutely stunning, from the lighting effects and reflections which flicker and sway as fires burn in their cauldrons into the way the wind blows banner overhead and shadows flutter on the ground below. And it's much more immersive to really see the world reflected back at you when you look down and see it in a puddle of water.

Godfall

Godfall Verdict

Overall it gets really close but still falls short. The bits are here however, so a year from now it very well could be an fantastic adventure, but it's not right now. If Godfall is not currently the best looking video game on the current market, it is certainly close.
