Silent Hill f: A Return to Dread

Image
I was present for the very first time when the fog started to settle. In front of me was a screen that let out the distinct crackles of the original Silent Hill. In my hands, I was gripping the first version of the PlayStation controller, which was a very odd color and a lot bigger than it is these days. I have played them all since, some I loved, some I tolerated, some I tempered like a mad prophet, even when I knew it was not a great game. And yet, a great many decades older and many consoles later, here I proudly stand to declare as my conviction that Silent Hill f is the very first one I have found that feels like a return to the original in decades. It is not perfect, and it is not the best in class. But it is most assuredly laden with the atmosphere, the type of gloomy tension that put me in the very first place, and the style of ambiguous narration that is the core of the reason we all fell in love with the town many consider cursed. The Atmosphere...

Silent Hill 2 Remake: A Dive into the Depths of Human Mind

Image
A Dream Awoken or a Nightmare Rekindled? My thoughts were divided between fear and joy with the news of the Silent Hill 2 remake. It had been burning in the back of my mind what horrors could this modern desktop version of the classic capture and will it live up to expectations? Having played it, its grandparents capture the same feeling, but my answer is yes/no. The feel and appearance of both the remake and the original is like comparing the beauty of a sunflower against the darkness of a grainy nightmare. With that being said, not so fast. The crux of Silent Hill 2's story captured in ‘as heartbreaking, haunting, and beautiful’ is remembered of a lost one, guilt, and psychology still feels like a fresh scar over two decades later. James Sunderland: A Man Lost in the Fog At its core, Silent Hill 2 revolves around James Sunderland, an everyday man lured to the ominous region of Silent Hill by a letter from his deceased wife Mary. The remake does no...

Silent Hill 2: The Game with a Sinister Storyline

Image
Silent Hill 2 isn’t just a game that you play; it is something that you suffer through from the start until the very end. You go through a gradual layer of psychological horror and with each passing moment, you feel as though you are hovering between a dream and a nightmare. It was released in 2001, and to say the least, it was ambitious for its time. SH2 places a great focus on dread, this is why the story and the atmosphere are top while combat is relegated to a supporting role. Some may think that is exactly where the flaw lies, however, most fans of the genre are ok with the way it goes, and let us not forget that we're talking of a (remake of a) game that was published a long time ago, for a different generation of players. You’re not some action hero or a brute soldier; you are James Sunderland, a normal man with grief and a rather ambiguous letter from his dead wife.  The Fog The main character of Silent Hill If there is one thing neglecting S...

Outlast Trials: Horror and Heartwarming Moments (and a Touch of Trauma)

Image
Welcome aboard, new reagents! Here's some advice: bring courage (and extra undergarment just in case!). Red Barrels took no precautions with The Outlast Trials; these challenges don't provide your typical stealth-and-pray Outlast experience! Throw some friends (or daring strangers!) into the mix, and this experience becomes an intense smash-and-grab through these tortuous trials! Being an Outlast fan since its launch, The Outlast Trials was truly astonishing for me - more than simply another entry in its series; Red Barrels have truly outdone themselves when it comes to horror games! It stands as a testament to their craft. Horror Has Evolved, Not Dwindled Of course, some might argue it loses some of Outlast's tension-filled experience; but let's be honest here; teaming up and racing for survival with friends can still be just as thrilling! It's this introduction of multiplayer into something that usually (and many other games are like this) is a single-player exp...
