S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl – A Tale of Survival and Staggering Beauty

Stepping into the Zone is akin to walking through a never-ending horror scenario. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl is an astonishing and deadly game, and there’s no two ways about it. A long wait is a prerequisite of being able to play this game. You’ll be abhorred when you realize what the game wants from you. However, when the case isn’t you in a rush to escape, or a nightmarish ion storm, the when the time isn’t spent running for ‘safety’, you’re left dumbfounded at the splendid and breathtaking sights and landscapes that can be observed in the ruined and abandoned world.

The amenities are astounding to those who have the courage to go deeper into the Zone. You just have to be ready to battle to get even the tiniest of accomplishments because the Zone isn’t welcoming, and that's the best part about it.

There’s no sense of being bored in the game, I mean how can one get disinterested when within the first few minutes itself the game showcases a single stalker in a glare of beautiful destruction, alive and oozing with detail. Not every game is categorized as a shooter or a simulator game, some can also be considered as an event – an event where one can face misfortune, taking minute wins and strategizing every move they intend to make.

The Trauma of Overcoming: An Art of Chaos, A Playthrough

An easy way to grasp the concept of this game is when I tell you a time it completely made me lose myself as well as how it then pieced me back together with sheer terror and adrenaline. My Geiger counter was making some ominous sounds as I was sitting in a corner of one of the old mills, ammo was almost done and supplies were not even funny. But there was no choice, I had to keep moving. Off in the distance were the sounds of mutated, grotesquely large pigs that were getting louder in their shrieks.

On the other hand the zone is beautiful to look at, untamed wilderness all over the place and some sunken down towers while the sun begins to set filled with an unnerving yet alluring beauty.

Desperate times called for desperate measures, and as a Stalker I had no choice but to shotgun an energy drink and make a run for it.

What followed next was a remarkable escape out of what appeared to be a long forgotten village, surrounded by the remnants of shattered homes around me that were lined along an endless path and acted like windows making me visualize a long lost reality. With all the chaos around me, the vicious mutants along with their piercing growls and gnarled snarls were only able to add an extra layer of horror. I could feel my heart racing as I tried to catch my breath and the forceful wind began hitting my eyes with massive amounts of dust.

Pew pew, I can barely focus through the gun fog that engulfs me. While lying behind a corroded vehicle in the dense fog I can spot some kinds of mutated creatures prowling.

Until I finally found the bridge, well, the remains of it to be precise. The edges of the wooden blames did a poor job in trying to hold on and the space between them began to reveal the never-ending void that lay under them. I could hear my Geiger counter starting to click rapidly warning me about what was about to happen but there was no way to stop, so I swung, just hoping that my boots would manage to help me get across

The storm kicked in with an awful intensity. Dust obscured everything around, and I could scarcely see five feet in front of me. The wind screamed like a banshee, alongside the lightning that came. Thunder clapped all around me as I weaved through one black hole after another. The atmosphere was charged, my hair raised. I did not know whether I would make it through the next moment, but my legs carried me forward regardless.

At long last, the outskirts of the town finally came into sight, and I rushed into an abandoned building collapsing onto the floor while the storm continued outside. I peered through the broken door, and all I could see were the bright bolts of lightning striking all of the rooftops while the deafening noise reminded me how my life within the Zone was still super delicate. And the NPCs residing near me? Not a single reaction. For them, it was merely another day.

The green in the sky is quite alarming and suffocating, then again so is the wild lighting that flashes every now and then. Flashing of the light reveals the ghost of a town that has been deserted.

This—this is the exact type of situation S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 excels in and builds upon. Its not enough for you to ‘live’, it asks that you endure every part of it.

A World Full Of Life And A World That Seems Lifeless

The ZONE is the star among the stars. Every bit of it is some work of art. From the dilapidated Soviet buildings to the deserted forests all shrouded in nuclear fog, it is an exquisite and terrifying combination. The level of detail is astounding. The rusty vehicles, broken tools and overgrown playgrounds are remnants of people’s lives after the horrors of war. But then the visuals are just one part of it, the Zone is alive. Mutants lurk in the nooks, anomalies permeate the zone, storms rage at lands without notice. It is always changing, making sure that your experiences are never duplicated. The audio design makes sure that the tension is increased ten folds. The far away ticking of a Geiger counter, the pathetic roar of a mutation and the blasting of a storm all try to push you off the edge. And even the silence feels loud, like the Zone is patiently holy waiting for the right moment to take action.

Endurance: A Skill

or those unfamiliar with the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series, there is a warning to be issued to those who buy Xbox games of this genre: this game will chew you out and spit you back. The game intimidates you from the start and gives no reason for it. Your inventory is barren, enemies are merciless and the survivors with guns are as dangerous as the loners who hide in the night.

Its pitch dark outside and me being the stupid archaeologist that I am, decide to shine a light onto the decaying structure in hopes to find something. But alas I am only able to see the peeling paints of the structure I am shined upon.

Every choice counts. Do you try to collect scraps in a hotspot even though your anti-radiation meds are low and there’s high chance you won’t make it out alive? Do you take the chance of fighting a pack of mutants blocking your way or do you try to go around hoping they don’t detect you? Everything in this game comes with a risk and that is what sets it apart from the rest, the ability to make a blunder comes with a price.

The detailed crafting system works but with certain conditions. Weapons are going to break, and sharpening them or modifying them into viable tools comes off as a Scavenger hunt. The chances of crafting a medkit or mending your rifle come with a hefty reward on the other hand, but the chances of succeeding with that high is next to impossible.

For those who can tolerate.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl is not a game someone would casually pick up and play. The game’s complexity can be daunting. But for those fans out there this is the type product they have been searching for. The game doesn’t hold your hand, if anything it comes with the promise of tough love.

It is an accurate analogy explaining the situation; I’m on a decaying bridge with leaky sides and a broken edge while a radioactive storm is approaching me, and in my hand a Geiger counter keeps ticking constantly.

If you enter the Zone for the first time, my recommendation is straightforward: give the game a few patches. Despite the positive aspects, it cannot be denied that the game possesses its shortcomings. Accidents, shuttering of the game, and in certain times poor performance can take you out of the immersion. But within those imperfections lies a treasure, a game which is untamed as well as unforgettable.

Final Thoughts

Rather than regular gaming, STALKER 2 is much more of an endurance test. Stunning yet brutish, captivating yet horrifying. It is a game one cannot enjoy without being a bit disoriented, but not due to its action but rather the fantasy which it provides. It is a world that exists in gameplay that feels too decomposed and lives in your imagination for a while when you switch off your PC or console.
